Giant Black Sea Bass and Peter Landecker

This photo of me and a 400 pound giant Black Sea Bass was taken by Larry Naylor on July 5, 2001 at San Clemente Island, just west of Los Angeles. I am reaching out (similar to Michaelangelo’s painting in the Sistine Chapel) trying to get this beautiful fish to be curious and come closer. Larry thanked me for taming the fish and I thank him for capturing the moment so beautifully.  I was with this fish for about half an hour before Larry and his buddy Constance arrived.  This fish actually permitted me to touch him/her from (very large) head to tail! I had used up all my film before Larry and Constance arrived, so I was really able to visually focus on the fish. I stayed with the fish a second half hour until I got cold. We were on the dive boat Westerly from July 3-5, and I also thank Captain Jim for finding lovely dive sites such as this one with giant kelp.

I took this photo with a Nikonos II, an old Subsea 50 wide angle strobe and a Sea & Sea 16 mm conversion lens just after encountering the Black Sea Bass on the same dive, before I was able to caress it.
