This 22 pound
sheephead fish produced 8 pounds of fillets. The
fish was eaten, but not all in one sitting! ;-) I created portion sized
servings. I gave away some and ate fresh fish for the first few days after the
dive. The rest is frozen, to be consumed over the next month or two. I will not
kill any seafood I do not plan to eat. The fish head is fertilizing my backyard
soil. I may later retrieve the skull, as the teeth are impressive. This fish was
the largest that anyone on the boat caught during the trip.
This fish was
caught on a two day Scuba Diving trip on the boat Peace, out of Ventura,
California. The boat was chartered by my dive club, The Sea
Divers. I did 10
Scuba dives north and west of San Miguel Island on September 24-25, 1999. The
weather was so calm we were able to dive San Miguel's three major pinnacles
(Richardson's Rock, Boomerang Bank and Wilson's Rock) on the same dive
trip.
One of the delightful features of the Peace
is that it offers an
on-board hot tub. Waters in the Northern Channel Islands are cold, so it is
really nice to have a source of hot water before and after each dive as well as
at the end of each diving day.
