NOVEMBER  2002 DECEMBER

“Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less often.”

SUNDAY  PROGRAMS

November 10.  THAT WAS ZEN; THIS IS TAO.  After an obscure attempt to discuss Zen Buddhism earlier this year, Rich Johnson will try to do better with the principles of Taoism, including readings from the Way of Power by Lao Tze, its nominal founder.  Rich will moderate.

November 17.  DISPELLING MYTHS OF ISLAM.  Athia Carrim, from the Muslim community, will help us to understand the reality of the Muslim religion.  Beth Perkins will moderate.

November 24.  FEAR, GUNS, AND VIOLENCE IN AMERICA.  Penny Hendricks will show a taped interview of Michael Moore (author of Stupid White Men) and producer of movie “Bowling for Columbine.”  The tape includes some very thought provoking excerpts from the documentary/movie.  Also included in the show, author of Culture of Fear, Barry Glassner.

December 1.  CHRISTMAS IS A COMIN’.  Ernie Pipes, minister emeritus of the Santa Monica Unitarian church will discuss the stories, traditions, and customs of Christmas.  He will speak of the history, origins, and meanings that preceded the Christian overlay of this solstice festival.  Les Berg will moderate this morning.

December 8.  REFLECTIONS FROM A FORMER CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR.  As the possibility of war with Iraq seems more and more likely, John Simpson, who had CO status during the Vietnam War, will lead a discussion about the role of conscientious objection, explain how his opinions have changed and argue that the draft should be re-instated.  Moderator:  John.

December 15.  THE CORNERS OF THE MIND.  Milt Holman, (who earned his Ph.D. in experimental  and organizational psychology from Stanford half a century ago) will discuss memory.  Starting from what was known then, he will bring us up to present with the knowledge of how our memories work.  Beth Perkins will moderate.

December 22.  CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS.  Carol Simpson will accompany us as we will sing songs we know about Christmas and this season.  Bring light refreshments for a potluck brunch at Mathews Cottage.  Rich Johnson will moderate.

December 29.  BEING HERE NOW.  A compassionate look back as we move forward.

January 5.  TWELFTH NIGHT IN THE DAYTIME.  Potluck dinner at 1 p.m. At the home of Bob Johnson and Linda Klein.  White elephants will be exchanged in honor of the Magi.  Remember, a white elephant in this case refers to some item which you no longer wish to possess, but something that some else may or may not enjoy having for their own.  (No Meeting at Mathews Cottage.)

****************CALENDAR OF UPCOMING EVENTS*****************

November 17 - SBUF BOARD MEETING at Mathews Cottage after fellowship at approximately 12:30 p.m.

*******************COMMUNICATION CORNER*************************

Please extend your loving thoughts to Eleanor Thrane whose husband passed away in October.

We are also sorry to learn of the passing of Lorelei Blessing, a former member of SBUF.

LENDING LIBRARY.  A lending library for SBUF is being launched.  Marilyn Doty is the  organizer and will troubleshoot as needed.  On the last Sunday of October, there appeared a rolling library cart with books currently gleaned from members’ own libraries.  In the back of each book is a card where the name and date will be written, and placed in the wooden box on the cart.  When returning a book, cross off name and date and place in the envelope at the back.  If you wish to offer your books for loaning, please stamp or write you name inside the front.  The envelope and rotating card will be handled by Marilyn.  Please take care of the borrowed books and return them for others to enjoy.

                        PRESIDENT'S  CORNER - November '02

The Board has decided to invite ministers to speak to the Fellowship every month or two.  The first of the ministers to address us will be the Rev. Ernie Pipes, Minister Emeritus at Santa Monica Community Church on December 1st.  Please plan to attend that Sunday and bring your friends.

The holidays are fast approaching.  We invite members and friends to attend the Twelfth Night party, to be held Sunday, January 5th at the Klein Johnson's home in El Segundo.  White elephant gifts will be exchanged.  See the notice elsewhere in the Newsletter.  We wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season with friends and family.

It is also time to make your holiday gift to the Fellowship, ensuring a great tax deduction for 2002.  Everyone is busy and you may have overlooked the Fellowship during the last few months. We are in need of your contributions!  The minimum cost to the Fellowship to retain each member is about $100 per year, considering the UUA, PSWD, mailing expenses and a small portion of our rent for the cottage.

From SBUF President, Les Berg

P.S.  Looking forward into the New Year, save any auctionable items for our annual fundraiser.
