SUNDAY PROGRAMS
July 3 - LIVING UNDER FASCISM It couldn't happen here in America...or could it? The Rev. Davidson Loehr, minister of First UU Church in Austin, Texas, delivered a chilling sermon last fall outlining what fascism is, and how to recognize it when we see it. Excerpts of his sermon will be presented by Carol Simpson. John Simpson will moderate.
July 10 - THE GREEN PARTY Our speaker, Patrick McBride, was the coordinator for the South Bay Green Party for 3 years from 2000 to 20003. He will tell us about his involvement with the Greens, explain what they are all about, as well as discuss political parties in general. Moderator: John Simpson
July 17 - SUFISM This is the metaphysical aspect of the Islam religion. Everyday sayings and aspirations have been passed down through the centuries by Sufi Masters. Beth Perkins will give an introduction to the Sufis and read some of their sayings. Moderator: Beth Perkins
July 31 - ANNUAL BRUNCH Mark your calendars now!. This is our annual celebration! We will meet at 11:00 a.m. at Alpine Village. The buffet style brunch offers many choices. The cost is $15 per person. Your check should be made out to SBUF. Penny Hendricks will be taking reservations so please call to indicate your plans to attend. Call Penny.
August 7 - GOING TO HEAVEN IN A HAND BASKET Violence, corruption, pollution, hunger, disease---The world today is a scarier place than it's ever been. Or is it? Rev. Terri Masters poses the question: Are we worse off now than people were in the past or are we just more frightened? Let's celebrate how far we've come and recharge ourselves for the journey ahead. Moderator: Carol Simpson
Aug. 14 - RECESS FOR THE SOUL. Bernie DeKoven, author of "The Well-Played Game" and local Redondo Beach resident, will perform excerpts from his new spoken-word CD "Recess for the Soul." As Bernie explains, "We seek enlightenment with earnestness and deadly seriousness, when often what the soul most needs is a chance to come out and play, and expand its capacity for delight." Moderator: Linda Klein
