“Ever since there have been men, man has given himself over to too little joy. That alone, my brothers, is our original sin.  I should believe only in a God who understood how to dance.”                                               Henri Matisse

SUNDAY PROGRAMS

January 8 - HOW DO YOU SPELL GOD?.   Rhonda Thomas  will present a video and talk about Spiritual Diversity.  Rhonda is a director in senior activities at Beach Cities Health District and a Native American, Linda Klein will moderate.

January 15 - THE EMERGENCE OF CHINA.   Frank Braun, a journalist who writes about space and world affairs, will discuss China from the perspective of Brazil's former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, how China's planned space program reflects its future ambitions, and views from an unnamed Chinese diplomat on China-Japan relations.  Beth Perkins will moderate.

January 22 - GETTING CLEAR ABOUT THE BUDDHA   With his usual flair and enthusiasm, Dee Masters returns.  He will share the life and teachings of Sidhartha Guatama, known affectionately as "the Awakened One."  Will we come away understanding "attachment," "nothingness"???  And what about "self"?  What are the stumbling blocks in modern America to discovering your Buddha nature?  Dee suggests, “Bring your knowledge of Buddhism and your wisdom and wake me up!”  Penny Hendricks will moderate.

January 29 - MORE VOICES, MORE CHOICES: WHY WE NEED MEDIA REFORM.   In this taped talk from last year's UUA General Assembly, Bob McChesney discusses the abject failure of today's press to inform so that democracy can prevail. McChesney is a research professor in the Institute of Communications Research and the Graduate School of Information and Library Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Carol Simpson will moderate.

February 5 - FREEDOM FROM ASSUMPTIONS   Barbara L. Reinhart, M.A., will discuss how Unitarian Universalist principles and values may be enhanced by integrating some of the wisdoms of Buddhist philosophy and psychology. Barbara is a former SBUF member, a lifelong Unitarian, and also became a practicing Buddhist in 1996.  (This program was originally scheduled for December 18, but changed due to illness.)  Penny Hendricks will moderate.

February 12 - "DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE BIBLE" part 2.   Was Jerico built on an earthquake fault?  Did the Jews really cross the Red Sea?  What is manna from heaven really?  Linda Klein will take you through the bible, starting with the book of Exodus, as presented by author Kenneth C. Davis as he examines some of the biblical archaeological evidence, explains mistranslations and presents some facts you may never have learned in Sunday School.  Moderator:  Linda Klein

Bea Schwartz was hospitalized with pneumonia for the duration of the Christmas weekend.  She is home now and doing better.

Farewell to the Dotys.  In case you don’t already know, we regret to inform you that Marilyn and Ted Doty are moving to Oregon in January.  They have given us much in the way of energy, speakers, ideas for programs, and have shared their loving, positive ways of looking at the world.  They are truly examples of people who “walk the talk”!!!  Ted and Marilyn, you will be missed.  We wish you the best.

If anyone has an idea or a wish for a particular program, please don’t hesitate to let someone on the program committee know about it.  Call Penny, Linda, Carol, or Beth.
