SUNDAY PROGRAMS

July 16 - YOUR CONSCIOUSNESS  Rev. Jim Conn will present the program this morning. Phillip Roth’s new novel,  THOUGHTS ON THE CONSCIOUSNESS OF “EVERYMAN” IN THE 6TH YEAR OF THE 21ST CENTURY   takes its title from the medieval morality play; and it pushes me to ask a few questions that usually go unasked in the public arena.  If we are so comfortable, why do we feel so anxious?  If we are so strong, why do we feel so afraid?  If we are so wealthy, why do we feel so poor?  Is there a name for this sense of dis-ease?   Rev. Jim Conn serves as the Director of New Ministries for the California-Pacific Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, where he previously served as Urban Strategist. For 22 years, he was the United Methodist Minister of the untraditional "Church in Ocean Park."  Jim was also a former mayor of the City of Santa Monica.  Peter Landecker will moderate.

July 23 - STOP GENOCIDE NOW  Amnesty International activist Gabriel Stauring will share slides and a video presentation.  Penny Hendricks will moderate.

July 30 - THE ROAD MORE OR LESS TRAVELED  Upon what, have you based your personal “theology”?  Today’s speaker Dee Masters will lead us through an inventory of values based on our life experiences.  Take a look at where you are now in relationship to your past.  How is the  current administration pushing your personal theological buttons??  This interactive program gives you a chance to stop and take stock.  Carol Simpson will moderate.

August 6 – “IN GOD WE TRUST”   Or do we??  This will be a discussion of our nation’s use of religious affiliation to God, on money, in the pledge of allegiance to the flag, “God Bless America” being sung in public arenas (since 9/11).  Come and share.  Penny will moderate.

August 13 - ARGENTINA AND CHILE by Peter Landecker and Lenore Snodey. Peter and Lenore will give a cultural, historical and scenic description of Argentina and Chile. They will show pictures and a video they took relating their experiences. A trip highlight was crossing the Andes from Chile to Argentina in Patagonia (from Puerto Varas to Bariloche) by means of 4 buses and 3 boats through 3 national parks. A field trip to the Andes from Mendoza was incredibly beautiful. For 9 days, they had an American friend (who was born in Argentina) personally show them sites in central Argentina not normally seen by tourists, as well as give them insights into the culture. They even took Tango lessons!  Peter will moderate.

August 20 – MIDDLE EAST PEACE SOLUTION!  There will be a discussion about exploring peace solutions for the Middle East military actions and the current humanitarian tragedy for so many civilians. Please come and participate!

August 27 - ANNUAL DINNER  12:00 p.m. in Coco’s Del Amo Room.   This will be our “gala” middle-of-the-day dinner celebration.  It will be a banquet room set up especially for SBUF. The cost will be $18 per person.  This will include everything but wine/beer.  We will gather at 12:00 (noon) and be served at 12:30 p.m.  There will be a choice of entrees.  We need a check made out to SBUF by August 13.  Come and celebrate the support and friendships we enjoy from being a part of this group!!!  Please send your checks to Penny Hendricks.  (Checks made payable to SBUF)   Be sure to practice your “after dinner” entertainment material!  Coco’s is located at 21815 Hawthorne Blvd. in Torrance (on  the west side of the street, just south of Carson Street).

 ***************Communications Corner***************************

Hey, Peter Landecker, thanks for putting together and printing new rosters!!!

If there is a particular topic you would like to see presented on a Sunday morning, or an organization you want to know more about, or a good book you would like to share, or any other ideas for Sunday morning programs, please call Penny Hendricks or Carol Simpson.   Your input is valuable to us!  Thank you for your help.

From the Dalai Lama:   “ In today’s highly interdependent world, individuals and nations can no longer resolve many of their problems by themselves.  We need one another.  We must therefore develop a sense of universal responsibility…It is our collective and individual responsibility to protect and nurture the global family, to support its weaker members, and to preserve and tend to the environment in which we all live.”                                                  (Doesn’t that sound simple???)
