SUNDAY PROGRAMS
January
7 - TWELFTH NIGHT (Okay, it is really the 13th “night”).
Come to a Holiday Party at Penny and Chuck Hendricks’ home in Redondo
Beach. The party begins at 4:30 p.m.
THERE IS NO MEETING IN MATHEWS COTTAGE TODAY. The party is a potluck dinner and “white elephant” gift
exchange. Please RSVP
your intentions and let us know what dish you plan to bring, if you know.
January
14 - HEALTH OF THE OCEANS.
Peter Landecker has done Scuba Diving in 30 countries, and will relate
his experiences and knowledge about the oceans of the world and how they are
sometimes significantly degraded by man-caused pollution, over fishing and
global warming. A lively discussion
should follow.
January
21 - CHANGING ROLES IN THE 21ST CENTURY.
In one way or another we are involved in the issues of parenting.
We may be dealing with grown children, with grandchildren, with aging
parents, or becoming the aging parent. Ronda
Thomas will talk to us about changes in traditional roles and the dynamics of
family relationships. Ronda has a
Masters in Clinical Psychology and is working toward her license as a therapist
in Marriage and Family Counseling. She
has been involved in care management for 35 years.
Beth Perkins will moderate.
January
28 - HOW SOCCER EXPLAINS THE WORLD.
For many people in the world football -- or what we in the U.S. call
soccer -- is much more than a game. It's
a way of life. So it's no surprise
that Franklin Foer puts forward the theory in his book that attitudes toward
soccer tell us much about different societies and their cultural attitudes. John Simpson will report on the book and lead a discussion.
February
4 – THE AUDACITY OF HOPE.
Who is Barack Obama? Come
watch and listen as he talks about his view of things.
Is our country ready for a man of color to be President?
Watch this videotaped interview from Oprah and see how he responds and
relates to people. If you have read
his books, please come and share your opinion. Penny Hendricks will moderate.
February
11 – THE WAR BETWEEN SCIENCE AND RELIGION: A CULTURAL WAR Reverend Jon Dobrer, minister of the Fullerton Unitarian Church and 2006
PSWIRL Theme Speaker will lead this service.
February
18 – WILLING SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF. For the moment, this constitutes poetic
faith. From Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Barbara Reinhart will return for another thoughtful presentation.

SBUF PROGRAMS
UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST SERVICE COMMITTEE
UUSC
is the separate organization that ensures that UU values result in action.
We can advance economic justice. We can defend civil liberties. We
can make environmental justice a reality. We can ensure that the most
vulnerable people are not denied their rights when disaster strikes. Together,
we make a difference! SBUF has been recognized for its support of UUSC.
In 2003, only 19% of the fellowship members gave financial support to the
service committee. In 2004, 2005 and 2006, 45%, 55% and 71% SBUF members are giving support to the work of
the service committee, respectively. Many thanks to Peter Landecker for serving as our
UUSC representative, reminding us to support this valuable organization.
