SUNDAY PROGRAMS
February
11 - THE WAR BETWEEN SCIENCE AND RELIGION:
A cultural war. Reverend
Jon Dobrer, minister of the Fullerton Unitarian Church will present this
topic. Jon has taught Islam, its
origins and beliefs, both at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley and at
the University of Judaism. He
writes a syndicated column called “Out of My Mind,” and is a regular in the
Los Angeles Daily News.
Dobrer was selected by the Los Angeles Times as one of the ten most
compelling speakers in Southern California.
This no doubt is owed to having worked his way through USC as a stand up
comedian. Come and be compelled!!!
He was PSWIRL 2006 Theme Speaker (http://pswirl.org).
Peter Landecker will be moderator.
February
18 - “THAT WILLING SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF for the moment which
constitutes poetic faith.” From Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1817).
Intrigued by Coleridge’s oft quoted imperative about temporarily
letting go of our disbelief, Barbara Reinhart looks at the life history
of this highly gifted and psychologically distressed poet and social activist.
Barbara will discuss her speculations as well as some Buddhist
perspectives about intuition and the poetic faith.
Barbara is a lifelong, active Unitarian-Universalist.
For the past ten years she has also been a practicing Buddhist.
Barbara has worked as a university professor and a full time staff
psychotherapist at Northridge Community Medical Group.
She continues to lecture in both religious and secular settings.
As a workshop leader her intuition, sensitivity and compassion can not be
measured. Penny Hendricks will
moderate.
February
25 - HOW DO I LOVE THEE? Count
the ways and poetic expressions on countless subjects.
Bring a favorite poem or amusing story to share.
Beth Perkins will lead this program of poetry and sharing.
March
4 - CROATIA AND SLOVENIA,
a program by Lenore Snodey and Peter Landecker. Being introduced to the very interesting culture, beauty and
history of this former Yugoslavia region recovering from a civil war brings a
new appreciation for peace. A video
and digital photos will illustrate the presentation based on a recent three week
trip there. Peter will moderate.
March
18 - Reverend Ernie Pipes will present a program on
the environmental crisis.

SBUF PROGRAMS
UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST SERVICE COMMITTEE
UUSC
is the separate organization that ensures that UU values result in action.
We can advance economic justice. We can defend civil liberties. We
can make environmental justice a reality. We can ensure that the most
vulnerable people are not denied their rights when disaster strikes. Together,
we make a difference! SBUF has been recognized for its support of UUSC.
In 2003, only 19% of the fellowship members gave financial support to the
service committee. In 2004, 2005 and 2006, 45%, 55% and 71% SBUF members are giving support to the work of
the service committee, respectively. Many thanks to Peter Landecker for serving as our
UUSC representative, reminding us to support this valuable organization.
