                                             SUNDAY PROGRAMS

August 3 – BEING A UNITARIAN    Last Sunday two Unitarian Universalist churches joined together for a special service and performance of a play by the young people.  This was interrupted by angry man with a shotgun.  It is believed that he chose this church because of their liberal view---the view we share as Unitarians.  Come and listen to a message written by Reverend Jon Dobrer http://pipl.com/directory/people/Jonathan/Dobrer and then let’s talk about how we feel about what happened in Tennessee.  More information about this tragedy is available at http://www.uua.org/news/newssubmissions/117156.shtmlPenny Hendricks will lead the program.

August 10 – SURVIVAL OF THE COOPERATIVE     The popular understanding of Darwin is competition--"survival of the fittest."  However that is more Darwinism than Darwin.  Indeed, Darwin and other scientists have shown that cooperation contributes as much or more than competition to survival; a much-needed lesson in our competitive world.  Reverend Jim Grant (a UU minister in San Diego and PSWIRL http://pswirl.org Theme Speaker in August 2008) will be presenting this topic.  Peter Landecker will moderate.

August 17 – SPIRITUAL PRACTICES    Dee Masters will return to share more regarding the spiritual practices of the big religions and how we can use some of these practices in our lives.  This time there will be time for discussion.   Among other things Dee studied comparative religion.  Dee is a member of the Pacific Unitarian Church.  He is also a teacher and a friend to SBUF.   Penny Hendricks will moderate.

August 24 – ANNUAL LUNCHEON   (No meeting at Mathews Cottage.)  This year for our Annual Luncheon we are going to the Szechwan Restaurant in Manhattan Beach at 926 N. Sepulveda Blvd. (at  9th Street).   We will gather at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.  The cost is only $10 per person including tax and gratuity.  Please pay ahead of time if possible.  John Simpson (our treasurer) will write one check from the fellowship.  You may write a check to SBUF and give it to Claire Aukerman or John Simpson.  If you have a question you may call Claire.  Special thanks to Claire for setting up this day!

HURRAY!!!  We have a new board member, Claire Aukerman.  She was nominated and voted in unanimously at the July board meeting.

NEW FRIENDS.     In June, we had the pleasure of meeting Shirley Bennett and her longtime partner, Terri.  They came partly looking for information about Unitarians and were especially interested in finally having the opportunity to officially marry.  It was 31 years ago that the relationship began on July 10th.  So on July 10, 2008, John Morehouse performed a ceremony at their home before a gathering of their friends and family.   We congratulate them and hope they will continue to participate in our fellowship and let us get to know each other.

WE ARE GLAD YOU ASKED!!!

How do I become a member of the South Bay Unitarian Fellowship??  Membership is open to all persons 15 years of age or older who sign a membership card expressing agreement with the purpose of the Fellowship.  Members become eligible to vote and hold office three months after signing membership cards.  Members are expected to participate in SBUF activities and to provide a helping hand and financial support when needed.
