April 2010  Newsletter

“It demands great spiritual resilience not to hate the hater whose foot is on your neck, and an even greater miracle of perception and charity not to teach your child to hate.” – James Arthur Baldwin

                                         SUNDAY PROGRAMS

April 4 – BUDDHA AND JESUS   In man's long journey toward spiritual development, Buddha and Jesus certainly stand out.  Our speaker, Simone Maudhui will offer some thoughts on the parallels, and the differences, between their lives and their teachings. Simone has been teaching and lecturing on a variety of subjects relevant to the challenges of living in our times.  She works to build a synthesis between religion, science, psychology and spirituality.   Her passion is to expose the Universal Oneness underlying the diversity in our world.  John Simpson will moderate.

April 11 - ANGELS OF MERCY    Come and listen to inspiring stories of  men and women who devoted their lives to helping others.  If you think of someone (past or present) whose life has been lived for others, share their story.  Meron Castain will present this program.  Penny Hendricks will moderate.

April 18 – THE SOUNDTRACK OF THE REVOLUTION    Reverend Jon Dobrer, currently minister of the Fullerton Unitarian Church will present this topic.  Jon has taught Islam, its origins and beliefs, both at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley and as Professor at the University of Judaism.  He writes a syndicated column called “Out of My Mind.” Dobrer was selected by the Los Angeles Times as one of the ten most compelling speakers in Southern California.  This no doubt is owed to having worked his way through USC as a stand up comedian.  Please come.  Peter Landecker will be moderator.

April 25 – ANTARCTIC!     Peter Landecker and Lenore Snodey will present a program about their recent adventure visiting Antarctica and southern South America (Argentina, Falkland Islands of UK, Chile, Uruguay). They will project beautiful images of icebergs, mountains, glaciers, penguins and seals as well as a short video they recorded. They also visited members of an Argentine Unitarian Fellowship. Claire Aukerman and Irma Cohen were also on this Princess cruise and will share their experiences as well.  Les Berg will moderate.

PROJECT NEEDS

Please find information about this community effort that operates at our back door.  In fact, part of their effort takes place right here in Mathews Cottage.  Project needs is run by St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, our landlord.  If you are interested and able to contribute time and energy, or to donate food, clothing, etc. there are many opportunities really close to our fellowship home.  We just have to walk across the parking lot!

Over the years many of us have made a monetary donation to Project:  NEEDS for the spring collection of funds that are matched (partially) by the Feinstein Foundation.

In order to show support from South Bay Unitarian Fellowship we can give our donations to St. Paul’s as a group.  If you have not yet made a donation, you can make out a check to  Project:  NEEDS, for any amount.  It will be doubled in part.  Please write Feinstein Foundation in the “memo”.  If you give the checks to Penny she will present them to Pastor Cheryl at St. Paul’s.  If you have any questions talk to Penny.

Every Tuesday evening this church invites all who are hungry.  They average 120 meals every week and approximately 300 families per month benefit from the food pantry.

How do I become a member of the South Bay Unitarian Fellowship??  Membership is open to all persons 15 years of age or older who sign a membership card expressing agreement with the purpose of the Fellowship.  Members become eligible to vote and hold office three months after signing membership cards.  Members are expected to participate in SBUF activities and to provide a helping hand and financial support when needed.

SBUF PROGRAMS   If there is a particular topic you would like to see presented on a Sunday morning, or an organization you want to know more about, or a good book you would like to share, or any other ideas for Sunday morning programs, please call Penny Hendricks. Your input is valuable!  Thank you for your help.

WE ARE GLAD YOU ASKED!!!
