SUNDAY PROGRAMS
May 2 – COMMUNITY FOR A BETTER ENVIRONMENT This is a California based environmental health and justice organization http://cbecal.org which promotes clean air and water and advocates for toxic free communities. Alicia Rivera will speak to us about this group and what concerns them. Peter Landecker will moderate.
May 9 -- REMEMBERING MOTHERS AND OTHER WOMEN WHO HAVE INFLUENCED OUR LIVES How many of us have said “Oh I will never say that (or do that) to my children!” and how many times have we heard the words coming out of our mouths? What is the best thing you remember about this person that you would honor this day? Come and share. Penny Hendricks will moderate.
May 16 – EDUTOPIA – STEPS TO QUALITY EDUCATION “The Children Are Our Future!” This popular slogan is supposed to have meaningful and positive connotations for having our children inherit a better future only to have arrived at facing the greatest threats to humanity and our environment. Since the past generations have not achieved a sustainable and better future with less violence, abuse and greed, we should examine what could be missing in early/educational development that might be essential toward achieving our hopes and dreams. What is Edutopia? Len Harris questions “No Child Left Behind”. He says we need to improve human relationships worldwide or we will not only leave children behind, we risk leaving humanity behind! http://www.edutopia.org/ Our speaker, Len Harris has valuable ideas for quality education. Les Berg will be moderator.
May 23 – TRANSFORMING BEAUTY Beauty is revolutionary in character. Its presence encourages the breaking down of obstructions and the revealing of new possibilities. Reverend Marguerite Lovett was pastor at the UU Church of Long Beach for 17 years. Come and meet her and hear what she has to say. Claire Aukerman will moderate.
May 30 – DISCUSSING THE JUNE BALLOT John Simpson will lead a discussion of current issues on the ballot http://www.voterguide.sos.ca.gov/pdf/english/ . All input from you and various organizations can be helpful. Bring your sample ballots. John Simpson will moderate.

PROJECT
NEEDS
Please
find information about this community effort that operates at our back door.
In fact, part of their effort takes place right here in Mathews Cottage.
Project needs is run by St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, our landlord.
If you are interested and able to contribute time and energy, or to donate food,
clothing, etc. there are many opportunities really close to our fellowship home.
We just have to walk across the parking lot!
Over
the years many of us have made a monetary donation to Project: NEEDS for
the spring collection of funds that are matched (partially) by the Feinstein
Foundation.
In order to show support from South Bay Unitarian Fellowship we can give our donations to St. Paul’s as a group. If you have not yet made a donation, you can make out a check to Project: NEEDS, for any amount. It will be doubled in part. Please write Feinstein Foundation in the “memo”. If you give the checks to Penny she will present them to Pastor Cheryl at St. Paul’s. If you have any questions talk to Penny.
Every Tuesday evening this church invites all who are hungry. They average 120 meals every week and approximately 300 families per month benefit from the food pantry.
How
do I become a member of the South Bay Unitarian Fellowship??
Membership is open to all persons 15 years of age or older who
sign a membership card expressing agreement with the purpose of the Fellowship.
Members become eligible to vote and hold office three months after
signing membership cards. Members are expected to participate in SBUF activities and to
provide a helping hand and financial support when needed.
