July 2011  Newsletter

"…in the new code of laws…, I desire you would remember  the ladies and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors…”      by Abigail Adams (1776)

                                         SUNDAY PROGRAMS

July 3 – “ WHEN IN THE COURSE OF HUMAN EVENTS…”  It was July 4, 1776.  That must have been an extraordinary time.  November 4, 2008 was another extraordinary time.  There is a lot going on now, here at home and other parts of the world.  Where are our patriotic feelings?   What do you think of our democracy and the freedoms we enjoy?  Come to talk about your pride, your doubts, your fears or frustrations. Penny Hendricks will moderate.

July 10POWER   If power corrupts, why do so many strive to attain it?  Or, is it the corrupt (immoral) who seek power?  How does a difference in the level of power affect the relationships between people?  What are the connections between money and power? We’ll discuss how we as citizens think politicians should use their power and how they very often actually do.    Our speaker today is humanitarian and philosopher Jerry Parker.

July 17   SUMMER TIME POTLUCK  (no meeting in Mathews Cottage) Come to the home of Bob Johnson and Linda Klein in El Segundo on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.  Bob will cook--- out on the patio but your side dishes, salads, bread, snacks,  etc. are needed.   Have fun, good food, and fellowship.  Call Linda or Bob to let them know what you are bringing.  If you have any question, call Penny.  There will be a brief meeting after food!

July 24   ECONOMIC PROBLEMS IN THE USA   Let's explore:  huge military expenditures, tax breaks for the privileged, white collar crime, wasteful expenditures, expensive prisons, and the list goes on.  Bob Willet is our guest speaker who will use a PowerPoint program with his presentation.  Bob asks:  “What allows other countries to be so much more efficient and successful?”  John Simpson will moderate.

July 31 – SHARING A THEORY OF THE ROOT CAUSE OF DEHUMANIZATION

We need to explore the root cause of violence, abuse, greed etc. in order to reverse this haunting dilemma.  What have we been missing that keeps us from achieving a more sustainable peaceful world?  Let's share some possibilities.  See below for more.  If we can come closer to the root cause of these “ monsters”, we could stand a better chance of reaching our dreams for a healthier future.  Len Harris is the guest speaker. Moderator to be announced.
