April 2013  Newsletter

“If you look at who’s being denied the right to vote, on absentee ballots, on provisional ballots, it’s Hispanics, it’s Blacks and it’s Native Americans and the Democratic Party ought to be touting this as the biggest civil-rights issue of our time.  But they are ignoring it.”                                                                        Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.  2006

                                               SUNDAY PROGRAMS

April 7– RULES TO LIVE BY:  The Golden Rule, The Silver Rule, The Boy Scout Motto and Law, Mae West's advice-----Do any of these -- or your own favorite -- offer real help in leading a good life.  John Simpson will moderate.

April 14 – THE 45TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ASSASSINATION OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.  Hundreds of union members and their supporters marched in Memphis on April 4, 2013, calling for a new commitment to the human rights causes he died for.  We can remember King and also discuss what has happened to unions in the years since.  Penny Hendricks will present the program.

April 21 – PROTECT YOUR BRAIN WITH MINDFUL NUTRITION (continued) – Eating a diet good for your brain is good for your heart.  This second discussion will focus on specific nutrients, vitamins, phyto-chemicals, and those considered anti-oxidants.  Many can be purchased as supplements. Are they useful?  Have you ever heard of Functional Foods? Medical Foods?  Of note, our speaker shared that several churches across the country have started programs to help congregates eat more fruits and vegetables.  Our knowledgeable speaker will answer our questions and provide some nutritious food.

April 28 – CAN UNITARIAN UNIVERSALISTS BELIEVE IN REINCARNATION?  Reawakening, recovery, renewal, restoration. Together we will explore the joy and suffering of rebirth.  Rev. Teri Masters is an ordained Interfaith minister and is a Chapel Minister at Wayfarers Chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes.  She is a graduate of the Chaplaincy Institute in Berkeley, CA. A certified clinical chaplain, she is an experienced hospice chaplain and a Pastoral Counselor, specializing in grief and loss, at Good Samaritan Counseling Center in San Pedro.  She will sing at the drop of a hat and is a member of Vox Femina Los Angeles, one of the country’s premiere women’s choruses.  Rev. Teri and husband Dee have two adult daughters and one grandson. Linda Klein will moderate.
