June 2015 Newsletter

“The establishment of religion clause of the First Amendment means at least this:  Neither a state nor the Federal Government can set up a church.  Neither can pass laws which aid one religion, aid all religions, or prefer one religion, over another.  The First Amendment has erected a wall between church and state. That wall must be kept high and impregnable.”        Justice Hugo L. Black

                                               SUNDAY PROGRAMS

June 7 – COMPASSION IN ACTION  This is a tape from PBS called “Lunch with BoKara”  as she shares a meal and conversation with two friends -- Robert Thurman, PhD, and Dr. Lawrence Brilliant.  This is a 25 minute tape which will allow time for us to share our thoughts.  Penny Hendricks will moderate.

June 14 - GET THE LEAD OUT  Bob Johnson will present a review of a Mother Jones article which makes a strong case for the lead in Ethyl gas being largely responsible for the surge in violent crime and teen pregnancies in the late 80's and early 90's plus higher rates of ADHD and lower IQ scores. If you are convinced by the data, a lot of money was and is being spent on jails, police, and the criminal justice system that would much better be spent on getting lead out of the environment. Come and share in the discussion about this important issue. Bob Johnson will moderate.

June 21 – DID COOKING MAKE US HUMAN?  This BBC video provides archeological and laboratory research to show how cooking is thought to be what enabled the brain to grow quickly to the Homo Sapiens brain of today.  Our speaker brings a program from the BBC.  Please try to come a little earlier.

June 28 – EXPLORING ENGLAND, SCOTLAND, and WALES with Peter Landecker. Peter recently returned from a 19 day trip starting in London, heading through Wales, and ending in the Scottish Highlands. Great Britain has a rich history and offers beautiful scenery. Peter will share his experiences, illustrated by his beautiful photographic images.  Penny will moderate.

Postponed to July 19 with no Mathews Cottage meeting on June 28!
