June  2007  Newsletter

“It may be a natural impulse to love one another, but how can we love someone if our own heart is stuck?  How do we let someone in if we won’t let ourselves out?”                                                             Gabrielle Roth

                                             SUNDAY PROGRAMS

June 10 – JUSTICE, EQUITY, AND COMPASSION    We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote justice, equity and compassion in human relations.  This comes from the bylaws of the Unitarian Universalist Association, Article II Principles and Purposes.  This is the second of seven principles.  How do we put this affirmation into practice?  Richard Johnson will lead this discussion.

June 17 – “WHO’S YOUR DADDY” ?   It is Father’s Day.  When you think of Father’s Day what comes to mind?  Come and share your thoughts about your dad or about being a dad.  What about you is like your dad?  In what ways are you not like your dad?  We can get to know each other better by sharing our histories.  Penny Hendricks will moderate.

June 24 – SICKO  In a recently video taped interview, Michael Moore talks about his new film “SICKO”.  In this film Michael takes on the trillion dollar health care industry.  Come see a preview and hear Moore talk about this new documentary that is causing trouble.  The film will be released in the theaters June 29th.  Penny Hendricks will moderate.

July 1 – UNTITLED Beth Perkins will present an audio tape of Reverend Jon Dobrer, minister of the Fullerton Unitarian Church.   Jon has taught Islam, its origins and beliefs, both at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley and at the University of Judaism.  He writes a syndicated column called “Out of My Mind,” and is a regular in the Los Angeles Daily News.

Dobrer was selected by the Los Angeles Times as one of the ten most compelling speakers in Southern California.  This no doubt is owed to having worked his way through USC as a stand up comedian.  Come and listen to Jon as PSWIRL http://pswirl.org Theme Speaker in 2006.

July 8 - TRAINING FOR SELF-CONTROL, FREEDOM & HAPPINESS   This presentation sketches the transformative practices that seem to be required.  Among them is a "vocabulary of feelings."  Come and enjoy Reverend Ernie Pipes as he returns to provide nourishment for our hearts and minds.  Ernie Pipes served as the longtime, well loved minister of the Santa Monica U.U. Church.  Bob Johnson will moderate.

WE ARE GLAD YOU ASKED!!!

How do I become a member of the South Bay Unitarian Fellowship??  Membership is open to all persons 15 years of age or older who sign a membership card expressing agreement with the purpose of the Fellowship.  Members become eligible to vote and hold office three months after signing membership cards.  Members are expected to participate in SBUF activities and to provide a helping hand and financial support when needed.

SBUF BOARD:  The new SBUF Board of Directors was elected at the General Membership Meeting held during the break between a wonderful dinner and dessert.  Many thanks to Bob and Linda for their hospitality, food, friendship.  Every July 1st a group of SBUF members agree to run this fellowship for a year.  For the coming fiscal year of July 1, 2007 to July 1, 2008 these people have volunteered:  John Simpson, Les Berg, Milt Holmen, Beth Perkins, Peter Landecker, Rich Johnson, and Penny Hendricks.  (Thanks again to Lorna who contacted the members to ask if they wanted to join the board.

KUDOS to Les Berg.  Les led the effort to replace the SBUF sign on the west side of Mathews Cottage.  Thank you, Les.  The new sign is a big improvement.

More KUDOS to Les Berg.  There will be another smaller SBUF sign indicating the entrance to Mathews Cottage.  Thanks Les.  Your time and efforts are appreciated.
