August-September  2007  Newsletter

“The development of civilization and industry in general has always shown itself so active in the destruction of forests that everything that has been done for their conservation and production is completely insignificant in comparison.”                                                    Karl Marx (Das Capital) 1867

                                             SUNDAY PROGRAMS

August 19 - THE ROMANTIC INFLUENCE   The peak engagement of the United States with Unitarianism was heavily the result of the Romantic movement. Dee Masters will share some pre-Romantic writers and Romantic writers (first and second generation) as well as discuss the changes in the Romantic tradition through the Victorian period to today. You will look at some old familiar poems from high school and some with which you may not be familiar. We will tie these works into our principles.  Penny Hendricks will moderate.

August 26 - THE GOLDEN AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT IN ANDALUSIA   For several centuries while the rest of Europe was in the throes of the Middle Ages, Moslems, Jews and Christians created a vibrant and sophisticated civilization based on tolerance and together they rediscovered ancient wisdom. This long and unprecedented period of productive cooperation between the three monotheist religions of the West certainly has a definite resonance in today's world!   Our speaker Simone Maudhui returns to share her generous spiritual insights.  Linda Klein will moderate.

September 2 - CONCERNS OF THE DAY   What will it be a month from now?  This week we had Rove’s resignation, the revelation of Cheney’s 1994 discussion of Iraq, Don Imus back on the air, a magnitude 8 earthquake in Peru----anyway, come and bring up a topic to hear what others think.  Penny Hendricks will moderate.

September 9 - SBUF ANNUAL BRUNCH  Come to the Alpine Village Inn at 11:30 a.m. and enjoy a buffet brunch with the fellowship.   The cost will be $20 (includes tax and gratuity) and provides Champagne or juice, all that you can eat, and coffee.  And of course, fellowship with good friends.  Make checks payable to SBUF and send to treasurer John Simpson.

September 16 - GREEN IS THE NEW RED, WHITE AND BLUE   From New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman, the 11th Hour Project and your Interfaith Power and Light campaign about taking steps to stop global warming. We will watch Friedman’s DVD and discuss what we can do.  Peter Landecker will moderate this morning.

September 23 - SEARCH FOR TRUTH    “We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote:  A free and responsible search for truth and meaning.”  This is the 4th of the Unitarian Universalist Association, Article II Principles and Purposes.  Rich Johnson will lead the discussion of this 4th principle.
