February 2013  Newsletter

“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality.  I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.”                                                            Martin Luther King Jr.

                                            SUNDAY PROGRAMS

February 3 - IN THE NEWS  Carol Simpson will lead the program which allows us to bring up for discussion whatever concerns us and we can resolve the problems!  Carol will moderate.

February 10 - FEBRUARY—A TIME FOR FLOWERS, POETRY AND CHOCOLATE     Bring something to share.  You could bring a story, or poem, flowers or a song.  Share a memory of a special time or special someone, or a special place.

February 17 - THE END OF FAITH   Lloyd Drum from the Unitarian Church in Santa Monica will play Chapter Seven of the Audio Book The End of Faith by Sam Harris (also author of Letter to a Christian Nation and The Moral Landscape).  In this chapter Sam Harris offers an alternative to traditional religions that require faith in that which can’t be demonstrated.  Lloyd will moderate the discussion.

February 24 – SATYAGRAHA: THE VOICE OF TRUTH  Looking at these two spiritual leaders.  Gandhi’s “experiment with truth” was at the heart of King’s work for justice and equality.  For King as well as Gandhi, the methods of satyagraha, far from being neutral tools devoid of cultural values, contained precise, challenging blueprints for leading a moral life.
