August 2019 Newsletter

“It is of great importance in a republic not only to guard the society against the oppression of its rulers, but to guard one part of the society against the injustice of the other part.  If men were angels, no government would be necessary.”      James Madison (1788)

                                               SUNDAY PROGRAMS

August 4 –  can we talk?  UU Rev. Jon Dobrer, a Starr King and Theological Union graduate, served the UU Church in Fullerton from 1993-2014.  Jon continues teaching, doing columns for newsgroups, newspapers and writing about our world.  We welcome Jon again.  Penny will moderate.

August 11 what is it about robots? a selection from the “The Philosophy of Consciousness” DVD series.  Michael Bastone is providing us with the DVD.

August 18 – remembering maury garnhold  On June 8, Maury Garnhold was in Torrance Memorial Hospital when Bonnie Folkhart went to see him.  Maury’s son arrived soon after.  While they were there, Maury’s doctor advised them that he would probably not regain consciousness. They left the hospital and returned the next morning.  Bonnie had a chance to tell Maury she loved him at his bed side.  A short time later, Maury had passed on June 10th.  Bonnie returned to SBUF on August 18, and we were happy to to see her.  Since we had not seen her since Maury’s death, we decided to honor Bonnie and Maury’s memory by using this Sunday to share memories we had of Maury.

August 25 –  WHAT KIND OF PROGRAM DO YOU LIKE?  Do you have any ideas for discussion?  Is there anything in particular you would like to discuss today?  Penny Hendricks will moderate today.

September 1 –  are we now engaged in a great civil war?  UU Rev. Jon Dobrer, a Starr King and Theological Union graduate, served the UU Church in Fullerton from 1993-2014.  Jon continues teaching, doing columns for newsgroups, newspapers and writing about our world.  We welcome Jon again.  Penny will moderate.
